How to compress files in windows 10

Your collection of photos, videos, documents, and games can quickly fill up your hard drive. There is, however, a way to free up storage space without deleting anything.

Multiple files can be compressed into a ZIP file, reducing their file size without deleting anything. Zipping files is a great way to share or store files that you don’t use very often.

When you’re running out of hard drive space, compression can help you store more data by making the files and folders you already have on the drive take up less space. In the past, programs like Winzip were used to accomplish this, but Windows XP includes a built-in compression utility that accomplishes the same task.

Zipping and unzipping files

In order to zip:

  • Find the file or folder you’d like to zip.
  • Select (or point to) Send to, then Compressed (zipped) folder by pressing and holding (or right-clicking) the file or folder.
  • In the same location, a new zipped folder with the same name is created. Press and hold (or right-click) the folder to rename it, then select Rename and type the new name.

To unzip, follow these steps:

  • Locate the zipped folder from which you wish to extract files or folders.
  • Choose one of the following options:
  • To unzip a single file or folder, first, open the zipped folder, then drag the file or folder to a new location from the zipped folder.
  • To unzip the entire contents of the zipped folder, press and hold (or right-click) it, select Extract All, and then follow the on-screen instructions.

Take note

If you compress a single item, the compressed file will have the name of the original file. If you compress multiple files, the compressed file will be titled Archive.zip. If you already have an Archive.zip folder, a numbering sequence will begin for your files (i.e. Archive 2.zip).
