According to Gartner, Inc., by 2022, 75 percent of all databases will be installed or transferred to a cloud platform, with just 5 percent evaluated for repatriation to on-premises. This trend will be driven mostly by analytics databases and the SaaS model.
“According to inquiries with Gartner clients, organizations are developing and deploying new applications in the cloud and moving existing assets at an increasing rate, and we believe this will continue to increase,” said Donald Feinberg, distinguished research vice president at Gartner. “We also think that this starts with data management solutions for analytics (DMSA) use cases, such as data warehousing, data lakes, and other use cases where data is utilized for analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning” (ML). Operational systems are increasingly migrating to the cloud, particularly with the adoption of the SaaS application paradigm.”
According to Gartner’s research, global database management system (DBMS) revenue increased 18.4 percent to $46 billion in 2018. Cloud DBMS revenue accounted for 68 percent of the 18.4 percent increase, while Microsoft and Amazon Web Services (AWS) account for 75.5 percent of overall market growth. This trend underscores the notion that cloud service provider (CSP) infrastructures and the services that operate on them are transforming into the new data management platform.
Ecosystems are growing around CSPs that interconnect services inside a single CSP while also taking the first steps toward intercloud data management. This is in sharp contrast to the on-premises model, in which individual products frequently perform many functions but seldom have their own built-in capabilities to allow integration with neighboring goods inside the on-premises deployment environment. While there is some growth in on-premises systems, it is rarely due to new on-premises deployments; rather, it is owing to price hikes and mandated upgrades conducted to prevent risk.
“Ultimately, this demonstrates that the CSP infrastructure, its native offers, and the third-party solutions that operate on it are secure,” Mr. Feinberg added. “According to a recent Gartner cloud adoption survey, 81 percent of those using the public cloud used more than one CSP.” For most cloud users, the cloud ecosystem is spreading beyond the reach of a single CSP – to numerous CSPs.”
